Introduction

The Alexander Collection is the result of years and years of research, by three generations of our family, and many others.  As the information was organized to do one Alexander book, it was decided that due to the mass of information, it would be best to present the Alexander families in a collection format, rather than one single huge book.  Therefore, Volume I, deals with a little known manuscript by early family researcher, Winthrop Alexander.  Subsequent volumes will include other Alexander family information and the information contained herein, will be supplement by additional information.

Winthrop Alexander made three copies of his work, the typewritten original and two carbon copies.  A copy was given to Ann Gregath in her early years of researching the Alexander family, with the understanding that it was to be shared with other family members.   To that end, it was felt that it would be fitting to begin the Alexander Collection with the research that has fueled three generations of Alexander research.

The information provided in this book is transcribed from Winthrop Alexander’s second copy of the three.  In the reproduction of this 1931 text, every effort has been made to keep the compiler’s original information.  However, updates in format, correction of obvious typographical errors, etc., have been made in an effort to bring the text to a more current standard.  The dates are presented as month, day, year (ie: April 12, 1652).

Any readable handwritten notations within the text have been entered using the following typeface:  Genealogy of the Alexander Family.  As you can see, it does stand out against the typeface used for the bulk of the book.  It is hoped that this will serve to distinguish between Winthrop’s original material and any notations added later.

On page 24, of the original book, there is a hand stamped message that reads “SEE BOOK OF CORRECTIONS”.  In the books that are being transcribed and included in this volume there is no such book.  It is not known by whom or for what purpose the stamp was entered.

It is our hope that as we begin to share generations of Alexander research, that other family members will be inspired to continue researching this family of early colonists, settlers, explorers, pioneers, frontiersmen Indian fighters, and patriots.  The Alexander family is woven into a rich tapestry of Americana.  We take pride in that ancestry and hope other Alexander family members do, as well.
