From the Foreword:
The Rose Collection is representative of the interest of many people in the family history and genealogical research of the Rose family. This volume and those following are presented in an effort to assist those researching the Rose family.
From the dawn of time, man has left traces of his existence upon the face of the earth. Throughout history, steady progress has been made to record and preserve the fragile pattern of life for the benefit of present and future generations. The name, Rose, has many origins. A few are the old Germanic names of Rosalind and Rosamond, which were shortened by the Normans (French) to Roese and Rohere. The Normans brought them to England where they later became Royse and Rose. Others are Ros (Spanish) de Roos (French) and Rosa (Italian or Roman).
Some of the earliest English records contain Robert de la Rose in 1242, Robert atte Rose and Elena de la Ros of Oxfordshire in 1273. Rose of Cambridge appears in 1279, Adam atte Rose of London in 1305, and Peter Rose of Worcestershire in 1327.
One of the earliest records of Rose in America was the family of Robert Rose, who settled in the English Colony of Massachusetts in 1634. Te New England Rose families migrated to America from Scotland. The Roses of Colonial Virginia came from Nairnshire, Scotland, soon after the first settlement of Jamestown. A William Rose owned land in Surry County, Virginia by 1850. Rose family members and their descendents hae served family, God and country throughout the years.
