Numerous Missouri Infantry Regiments were organized
following the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. However, following the Battle
of Wilson's Creek, most of these units were consolidated and became the Missouri
Confederate Infantry Regiments.
Unfortunately, many records were lost, destroyed or
perhaps taken home by individuals as evident from gaps in the existing records.
Some of the enclosed records (RG-133-907 & RG-908 series microfilm) were
constructed from the Enrollment Records. Miscellaneous records include
information from the Register of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors who died in
Northern Prisons and Hospitals, the Official Records of the Union and
Confederate Armies, along with some newspapers articles that help flesh out
these records. Remember that re-organization and consolidation, along with
transfers to other Trans Mississippi Commands were common.
Many Infantry Units were enlisted at the commencement
of hostilities and fought throughout the conflict and often enlisted at more
than one point so it was impossible to list each enlistment site but usually
their enrollment and discharge location were common but one must look at the
muster card for each person for additional information.

The
Civil War saw the enlistment of almost every bodied men from age 18
and sometimes younger, to the men in middle 50s. The Enrolled Missouri Militia were raised in late summer and fall of
1861. All able-bodied men between the ages of 18-45 were required to enroll to
fight rebel guerrillas operating in their local areas. These men served within
the borders of Missouri, unlike the Volunteer Militia who served throughout the
Trans-Mississippi Region. However, some men bought
an annual exemption fee to be excluded from serving and many muster cards list
people who deserted and left the county or enrolled in the Southern Cause. Many
men only served a short period and received discharge for physical disabilities
or deserted. They often re-enlisted in other units as well. Many
times members were transferred to other State military units and the remarks on
each muster card must be checked for additional clues once one locates a
particular name. Many Calvary Units were enlisted at the commencement of hostilities
and fought throughout the conflict and often enlisted at more than one point so
it was impossible to list each enlistment site but usually their enrollment and
discharge location were common but one must look at the muster card for each
person for additional information.

Such
A Foe As Livingston
The Ca mpaign of Confederate Major Thomas R.
Livingston's First Missouri Cavalry Battalion of Southwest Missouri, by John C.
Livingston Jr., Editor Richard Peterson, 2004. 8½x11", hardbound book, 160 pages,
indexed. Livingston was with Brigadier General Stand Waite at the first battle
of Cabin Creek. Additionally, one of Livingston’s units of command was the
First Missouri Cavalry Battalion, First Indian Brigade, also known as the
“Cherokee Spikes”. From back cover: This is the story of the daring
swashbuckler, Major Tom Livingston, of Jasper County, Missouri. Holding a
Confederate commission, he recruited brave men and formed the First Missouri
Cavalry Battalion to challenge Union occupation of Missouri. It details
the saga of Livingston, his men, and the plight of Missourians in the midst of a
land torn by Civil War and guerrilla warfare. Livingston, well known and
hunted by Union commanders early in the war, nearly had his rightful place in
history lost as he met with the untimely death in a raid midway through the war.
The book tells a story that has been waiting for many years to be told. A
subject heretofore mostly unknown, it fills a serious gap in the history of the
war in Missouri. About the Author: John C. Livingston Jr.,
the great-great- grandson of Tom Livingston, spent ten years compiling the
biography. A graduate of the University of Colorado-Boulder, he lives and
works in Colorado.
