Other Publication Design Ideas

Quality may be a factor in deciding whether to included a printed photo in a family book, but not always. Many authors are producing hybrid books so they don't have to leave any photos out. This page contains some great ideas to be published by Gregath Company, Inc. to keep in mind.

Too often, we get into the "just the facts" mind set when deciding what we should put in and what we can leave out of a book.

  • Candid and "hammy" photos should be considered - as well as formal posed photographs.

  • Captions should not feel forced. Add information as you see fit.

  • Places also make a family what they are (or were). Don't focus solely on the people.

  • Dates are a good thing to have - and use, but don't discount something because of a lack of one.

  • Captions and photos both can be provided by - and credited - to the author, or other contributors.

This example is from Mt. Zion Baptist Church Axon, Georgia 1858-2008:

Though the caption on this page is short and simple, it does establish where, when, what, and the main subject in all of these. The page composition is nicely grouped, and they show nice variety.

Page 227 (cropped) from Stories of Our Family Our Lives Our Places, by Stephen Denker, 2009: Great use of different elements on this photo pages. By making the street level photo a "call out" of the aerial view, the author ties his elements together. Note the captions are not neglected either.

While there are no captions on this particular page, the photos are both great and they are in an identified book section. They capture both the cute and the everyday - with 98% of subjects showing enough to be identified by friends at time of publication.

The above is a good example of an informational caption. It has facts, as well as details. All people in the photograph are mentioned - names and relations (or lack thereof) are also noted.  Click here for another informational caption example.
