Augmented reality, or AR, is a way for readers and potential buyers to use their phone or tablet in a way that augments their interaction with something printed. Like most new technology, exactly what it is can be hard to define as everyone has different ideas of what it should do and can be. It can be something as simple as a digital overlay that appears on an electronic device when pointed at a book page or advertising: From pricing and page count, to what a photo looks like in a different time period. AR can be the method to see 3-D "on" the printed page, etc.

A few ideas:

  • Print at "thumbnail" photograph in the book to save space or not detract from the information with AR providing a larger sized photograph (in color vs. b/w if possible).

  • Print a historical photograph in the book and allow AR to provide a contemporary view (then/now).

  • AR can provide frames or filters for graphics printed in the book to improve the experience.

  • Record information in a graphic format that you are not printing in the book. Then AR can provide that information as a bonus to the reader when scanning an graphic.

  • Build a graphic in layers - each layer may be an AR bonus that contains material.

This can be done through a variety free and pay services. If it all seems a bit much, Gregath would be happy to provide assorted services, contact us for more details. If you are DIY, here are a few links to get you started:
