Slowing the March of Time:

Preserving and Protecting Items of Personal and Historical Significance

Recreating:

Overall, keep a written record of history of original object/item and note any changes, conservation actions, and additions.

* For documents and loose materials: Most any form of reproduction will be somewhat destructive to the original. Copying exposes to light & heat, printing usually exposes to excess light, photos or microfilming will expose to light (photos can be done without flash), even transcription may lose information due to typographical and reading errors, however if you are recreating and keep the original safe other times, these may be deemed acceptable risks to prolong a materials life. Because these are risks, the uses of acid free paper and acid free duplication processes are your best choices.

* For photographs: To re-photograph, select a well lit room and film that will not require a flash. Without flash, you should not have to un-frame older photos. Consult a local photographer or photo lab if your photos are not as good as you wish.

* For Jewelry, Furniture and Linens in general - Consult professionals in the correct areas (jeweler, seamstress, etc.) for recreations. Take photographs from all angles before undertaking the recreation.

* For General Housewares - What about the chip in the punch bowl? If functionality is wished for, many glass companies can re-grind the rim of glass, removing imperfections. What if someone broke a plate or there are plans for using the china often? Contact antique dealers with a list of what you need or might need. Mark the new pieces (nail polish, etc.) and keep a strict list of new vs. old. Flea Markets, Auctions, and occasionally garage sales are sources as well.
