Saddle stitched softbound book - one color coverSaddle Stitch Softbinding

Glossary Definition:

Saddle Stitch: Soft type binding where pages are printed four up and folded in the middle (spine) and stapled in the fold. Many program books and most magazines are saddle stitched.  Due to the paper being folded as a spine, this works well with only small page count books.

Authors enjoy these binding benefits:

  • Flawless Wrap Around graphics are no extra charge for printing on front and back covers.

  • Easy open includes a full 180 degrees.

Wire softbound book: one color ink cover looks two color

All binding/cover services are available as part of a complete publishing package, POD (small quantity charges may apply), and binding only. However, Gregath does not wholesale raw binding supplies to individuals or other binderies.

Saddle stitched softbinding projects can typically be found in coloring books, programs, catalogs, newsletters, magazines, journals, pamphlets, calendars, brochures, as well as a variety of booklets/planners and small page count books (booklets, workbooks, etc.) that are not perfect bound.  This is a great soft binding option for transitional (short use) items and fund raisers (due to economy in production).  While economical, the fact that the paper involved has been folded will reduce the lifespan of the item.  This can be reduced by the careful planning and use of paper grain, but for long-term preservation, different soft binding methods are suggested.

For books, periodicals, brochures, and other items under 80 pages, one method option is wire saddle stitch binding. Saddle stitch books are produced on double sized sheets of paper that carry 4 pages.  These sheets are then collated and the cover (flat, containing both front and back) into a rough book block.  The book block containing the large sheets of paper and cover are then folded in the middle and wire stapled on the spine.  However, this method does not allow for the spine imprint.

Standard types of soft bindings include:Some examples of past issues of newsletters - self mailer format.

Example of one color saddle stitched self mailing book - Stovall Journal.  Note no spine imprint, however wrap around allows for text and graphical elements on front and back.

Note: All softbound saddle stitch items shown on this page were printed by The Gregath Publishing Company.
