Autobiography

Karen Scott first developed an interest in genealogical research while assisting her husband, Randy Scott, with his genealogy.  However, she soon began to work on her own family history and has been doing so for over five years.  She served as Co-Editor of the Newton County, Missouri genealogical society's, the Genealogy Friends of the Library's (GFOL), quarterly newsletter, Newton County Roots, for two years.  Since 2003 she has been Roots Editor.  Karen also handles most of the publicity, press releases, and announcements for the organization. In the fall of 2003, Karen co-compiled and co-edited the Genealogy Friends of the Library Heritage Cookbook with fellow GFOL member Carol Wood.  It includes recipes from old Newton County, Missouri newspapers and those submitted by individuals with a Newton County connection.  She is currently working on a book about the Sheriffs of Newton County, Missouri.

Karen has been helping her husband, Randy, to transcribe the 1860 Federal census of Newton County as well as the 1900 Newton County census.  She has given lectures to genealogy groups as well as served as instructor at a "Beginning Genealogy" seminar given by the GFOL.  Karen works as a volunteer librarian at the Genealogy Room of the Neosho-Newton County Library one evening every other week and assists the GFOL's Corresponding Secretary with research requests.

Karen recently received the "Directors' Award" from the Missouri State Genealogical Association for her service as a GFOL officer, editor of the society's quarterly newsletter, abstracting and indexing census records, and teaching at the genealogy workshop.  Presented at the Missouri State Genealogical Association's 25th Annual Conference held in Columbia, Missouri, this is the highest award given by the state association to a volunteer genealogist.

A registered nurse for over ten years, Karen works in the Emergency Department of Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology as well as an Associate of Science degree in Nursing.  Karen has a special interest in forensics and forensic nursing.  She is a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).

She enjoys reading forensic case studies and watching forensic science programs as well as cooking and fishing.  Randy and Karen have three daughters and three grandchildren.  They recently completed and moved into a new oak log home with the idea of hosting family gatherings and running a "bed and breakfast" or "bed and stay" inn catering to genealogy researchers.
