Volume 2, Number 1
- How to print just that certain section only.
Software: Microsoft Internet Explorer/Outlook Express

Ever want to print out a small (or even large) section of a page or e-mail that was somewhere in the middle without printing our the entire page/message?  Here's what to do:

Highlight what you want to print (while holding your left mouse button down, slide your mouse over the text and then let up the button) and then on your keyboard hold down the control (ctrl) button while hitting the "p" key.  This will bring up a box to do with printing.  Toward the middle of the box on the left side is a "print range" area.  Click the circle next to "selection" and then the OK button at the bottom.  Yes, it's that simple. NOTE: if the page contains columns (with or without a table) this may get unexpected results - pay attention to what the mouse will let you highlight.

Tabs
Software: Microsoft Word

Ever want to line up a column of text/numbers and they don't want to work?  While some may never line up exactly how you want them due to the fact that "all fonts are not created equal", have you considered the different types of tab stops available?

Start your program.  At the top of your document window (pane) is your tab line.  The tiny box to the far left shows what type of tab you may be using.  Default tab stops are .5" and of the standard variety.  To set the tab, just click in the ruler-type area to the right (directly above the document) where you want a tab.  This sets the tab for anywhere in the document below your cursor.  To get rid of any set tab, just drag (while your mouse is positioned over it, click and hold down the left mouse button and drag, releasing it when it is off the line) it off to the left.  To change the type of tab, click the box at far left.  There are several different types of tabs available including a decimal tab.  You can also set a tab stop for a particular section by highlighting it first before setting the tab.

Don't discount the Microsoft website as a source for help and extra goodies.

Almost every software program section can be accessed directly by adding a "/" and the software name such as

Microsoft Word
Make your program stop underlining/linking web information.

Ever wish your computer wouldn't try to help you so much?  Get tired of typing an email or web page address out only to have it underline and turn blue or a strange color?  Here's what to do!

A quick fix is once the information that has been typed has gone blue, just hit the delete button once, it will "un-blue/link" without deleting text.

If you wish it wouldn't happen at all, here is what you do:

  • From pull down menus on top, select format

  • From menu select auto format

  • From auto format, choose options button

  • From options box choose "auto format as you type" tab

  • Under "replace as you type" (middle section) click the bottom box -
deselecting "internet and network paths with hyperlinks"

  • Choose OK, then OK

This information is provided on MS Word 2000, if your version differs, instructions may be a bit different, but you should be able to get it figured out with the instructions above.

Though give-aways, sweepstakes, and surveys can be tempting, many are set up to "harvest" email addresses that are provided.  These can be used for the company you participated with or sold to others.  Best bet, if you wish to participate in these, sign up for a free email address (hotmail, yahoo, bolt, etc.) that you use for this type of thing only.  When you get too high a volume of junk mail, close the account and open a new one (different email address).

Computer aid ?!? - Font Type
Microsoft Internet Explorer
///////////////////////////////

Much of what you see online has the font pre-defined by the person who wrote the page.  However, you might be surprised at the amount of text that is not.  For text that a font hasn't been chosen, your program assigns and shows the default font.  If you have a font you love to read and it is easy for you, or it shows up larger due to point size ratio, you may want to change the default font.  How to:

click on the "tools" pull down menu then click on "(internet) options".  The dialog box your get has many tabs at the top, if you are not looking at the "general" tab, click it.  Near the bottom of this tab there is a row of buttons, click on the "fonts" button.  Doing this brings up the fonts box.  Select your favorite font in both lists, click OK, then OK and you've done it.

Have a penchant for newsgroups, bulletin boards and/or chat rooms?  Did you know that these are also ways that SPAMmers get your email address?  Again, consider using an email address that can be changed frequently when you get too much SPAM daily.

Volume 2, Number 8

Almost all programs will allow you to adjust the font size to some extent or another.  Production programs such as Acrobat, FrontPage, Print Artist, Publisher, Excel, Corel Draw, etc. usually give the most control.  Internet programs (with the exception of outgoing html email) are a bit different.

The Rule of Thumb: always look at your pull down menus!  Most programs have a menu that has to do with viewing or formatting (many times both).  Click them to see if there are font changing options.

In previous issues it has been suggested you may want to use alternate or "disposable" email addresses to help combat SPAM.  Please find below some places to get started (if you haven't already done so).

Some Free email services: http://www.hotmail.com, http://www.yahoo.com, http://www.bolt.com, want to search for others, just go to your favorite search engine and type in keywords like free, e-mail, web based, etc.

Some places to start looking into disposable email addresses: http://SpamGourmet.com (free), http://www.emailias.com, http://www.spamex.com, http://www.spamslicer.com, want to search for others, just go to your favorite search engine and type in keywords like disposable, e-mail, software, etc.

Ever been registering for a service you really want and get prompted to provide an email address - or you can't use the service - even when the company will never need to contact you by email?  If you do not choose to set up alternate or disposable email addresses, consider providing a fake one.  Be careful with this, however, you don't want to end up SPAMming some other person to keep it out of your box.  Currently, anything sent to @goplay.com gets lost in cyberspace because that company no longer is in business.  You might also check with your ISP to see if they have a suggestion for a "safe" fake address to provide.

Volume 2, Number 12
Microsoft Programs

Ever spent a few minutes getting a passage of text just the right format only to realize that you now need to change other passages - some of which are in other files? Many of the Microsoft programs have this format painter feature to help.  Look in the button toolbar for a button that looks like an actual paint brush - usually near the paste button.  This is your format painter.  To use, place your cursor on text that carries the format you want to duplicate.  For single use, click the format painter once and then drag (holding down your left mouse button) over the area you want to carry the new format.  If you have a lot to do, double click the format painter button (remember the format "picked up" will be where your cursor is).  The double click will keep the format painter feature on - changing the format everywhere you click until you hit the escape button.  If you reformat something you didn't mean to, hit the undo button - this will also cancel the format painter feature.  Note: Different programs have different limits to exactly what format features are "copied" in this feature.
