What’s It Mean?

Blueline: For Gregath use, see ARC.  Below is a definition from "The What Shall I Write Handbook", Corrine Russell, 1992, that is a good addition to our ARC entry:

"Bluelines are page proofs. They represent your last chance to review copy looking for errors.  Depending on the printing process your printer uses, bluelines may be expensive to produce, and many printers will not provide them unless you request them.  If printers do provide them, they may be expensive, so ask first.  Bluelines may be a good idea if you have a lot of photographs, for bluelines present your only opportunity to see photographs in place.  Check them carefully.  Make sure they are in the correct position, and that they are not upside down or turned backward.  Because bluelines are so expensive to produce, now is the time to start editing and proofreading. Unless they are printer's errors, changes made at this point cost you dearly."

ARC (Advanced Reading Copy): A sample publication produced with author/customer submitted material.  Many times this is in an alternate binding (or unbound with small publications) than the main publishing.  The reproduction process is usually not the same as the main printing (100+) and therefore differences in quality, text block placement, etc. may occur between the ARC and the published book.  For POD, however, this gives the customer the chance to see the quality of photograph the supplied material will produce.  Since Gregath works mainly from submitted camera ready copy, an ARC is generally not necessary.  Our quality guarantee covers any printer error (such as upside down photos) that may occasionally occur.

Does your genealogy (book) contain quite a few pages?  Rather than publishing one book with 1,000 or more pages, consider breaking your work up into family lines for different books or volumes.  By doing this, they can be printed and released at different times or all at once.  This may ease the enormity of your "job" getting your family/families in print.

Decided on a hard binding?  When working with a new printer or publisher, if the quoted price seems "to good to be true", it may be.  Double check with the as to why the price is so much lower.  Items that may effect hard binding price include type of binding (oversewn, smythe, case bound, etc.), what optional steps are not included (header/footer bands, rounding, etc.), type of cover stock, thickness of binding boards, etc.

Genealogy ideas

Though you are probably already using US Gen Web Project (see previous tip), have you added your query/queries to the email lists that correspond geographically to your problem area(s)?  To get started, go to the county in question.  We suggest you then subscribe to their email list (see below for definition).  If you prefer not to, email the county coordinator with your query and request it be added to the email list.

What is an email list?  It is a list of folks who share at least one common interest/theme.  They subscribe to the list.  Anyone on the list can ask or answer questions.  Though sharing many things with a bulletin board format, this is ran through your email.  When anyone sends email to the list, everyone gets a copy in their inbox.  Two places to start your email list search is on US Gen Web and http://egroups.yahoo.com
