Notch/Notching (may be used in perfect binding): Parallel grooves cut into the spine perpendicular to the binding edge. The depth and the distance between the grooves can be adjusted to suit the size and weight of the text block. Notching (vs. not notching) increases the amount of surface area on the spine that comes in contact with the adhesive and increases the strength of some type bindings.

Offset Printing: A photo-duplicate of each page - achieved through the use of a plate made from an the original.

Terms marked with an asterisk (*) are not generally used in our office.

Design Inspiration - Self Mailing USPS Item
///////////////////////////////

When using a self mailing design (letter, brochure, small packet, etc.) instead of an envelope, USPS suggests the heavier the paper the better (at least 24/60#) as it stands up to their high-speed sorting machines better. If producing a marketing piece, it is important that it arrives in good shape and easily readable.

Unless you are providing a camera ready cover layout along with your finalized manuscript, check with your publisher to see if they are willing to work on the design with you before you have your manuscript complete. Terms may vary, but as cover design can turn into a long process, it is usually worth it to get a jump start - unless you have no expectation of actual publish date.

Genealogy ideas

Are you stumped with bad handwriting, smudges, or bad “preservation” copies? If you can read some, but not all, of what you are interested in – try the computer. If you have a partial site name, search what you can read with the location. If you have a partial person name, take it to genealogy-based search areas such as Ancestry, or even "Google it". Use contextual clues to help your search, such as a newspaper article that lists co-workers – look for other business records or references.

Consider signing up for free newsletters to get ideas on everything from book design to app/software use, and marketing. Many, such as Amazon's publishing newsletters may be a bit on the "sell our services", but if you scan the headlines of each issue, hidden gems emerge. A quick way to keep these organized would be to take out a free email address just for these subscriptions. That way you don't have to check it but when you have a bit of time to look things over and you can just delete issues as you've mined them for information.
