What�s It Mean?

Acid Free (Paper) (see pH Balanced): The use of this term varies from the logical definition of the individual words to a wide variety of standards - always have a company explain their definition See Also Archival webpage. Having no acidity and no residual acid-producing chemicals. Below is a definition from "Preserving Family Keepsakes Do's and Don'ts", Ilene Chandler Miller, 1996:

"Any paper that contains an alkaline (pH higher than 7 or an absence of acid) base and is often lignin-free."

Advanced Reading Copy (ARC): A sample publication produced with author/customer submitted material.  Many times this is in an alternate binding (or unbound with small publications) than the main publishing.  The reproduction process is usually not the same as the main printing (100+) and therefore differences in quality, text block placement, etc. may occur between the ARC and the published book.  For POD, however, this gives the customer the chance to see the quality of photograph the supplied material will produce.  Since Gregath works mainly from submitted camera ready copy, an ARC is generally not necessary.  Our quality guarantee  covers any printer error (such as upside down photos) that may occasionally occur.

Please consider the color of cover you choose when deciding on your imprint color. A dark imprint may be considered bold on tan or orange, but will fade into the fabric if placed on navy or black. Likewise, gold and silver can be a very subtle choice if choosing a light color fabric - highly visible at only certain angles as the light catches the imprint.

Marketing advice

Free or nearly so:

Setting up a table or booth at a local, regional, or themed event is a great way to get the work out about your book. If you are still working on the project and want to get "the buzz" started, this can be a fun way to make friends and meet new people as well. You may find more material for this project - or the next - landing in your lap as well.

Set up at the county fair, exhibit at the Christmas craft fair, see if you can man a table at the local library - even if they don't have special events for authors. Genealogists and historians should get out to reenactments, society meetings, ancestor fairs, workshops and the like.

Genealogy ideas

Are blogs good or bad? The same question could be said about periodicals, books, websites, or secondary sources. There is not one good answer to pigeonhole this format of information. As long as you weigh the information you find in a blog, yourself, you can find many gems - and have fun too!
