Smaller genealogy formats:  work with your printer/publisher on the best overall size book to suit both the text material and your budget.  For genealogy books, we find the more standard size that is most economical is our standard 8½x11".  However, we are asked quite frequently to do both 6x9" and 7x10" books.  While most printers can do any size 8½x11" and under quite easily, many times a 6x9" book that has 200 pages, a 7x10" with 200 pages, and a 7x10" with 200 pages all cost the same per book.  Sometimes a custom size, though smaller even costs more.  Additionally, if you maintain a nice margin area, one normally pays for fewer printed pages in larger formats.

Standard and deluxe hardbinding carries a foil imprint.  Don't overlook the fact that you can choose gold or silver at no extra charge.  Many times bronze is also available for no extra cost.  Special foils such as holographic, or colors are available at extra charges.

Consider advertising "novelties" as an alternate form of marketing.  Are you going to a reunion or large genealogy workshop?  Have a shirt made up that advertise your project or start conversations.  Pen and pencils may also be a way to sell by starting conversations, as might a number of other items.

Don't forget when searching the census that several "schedules" exist for different time periods.  If available, use them together.  For instance, if you find someone on a mortality schedule, you will probably be able to find them on the main census.  Mortality listings also point to other non-census places that may have information such as death records, obituaries and funeral home records.

Take a visit to the US National Archives.  They are making more and more available online.  While this will never take the place of research trips, there are lots of things to help you out.  For instance, several of their printed publications are available in their entirety online free of charge.
