Gregath Publishing e-zine Please note that while an effort to generalize much of this text has been made, some references to "we, our, etc." still occur and much of the information provided applies to The Gregath Publishing Company and may not with other printer/publishers. ALWAYS double check with your printer/publisher on every detail. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Table of Contents What's It
Mean? -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Paper Brightness: refers to the ability of paper surface to reflect light. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Run across a word that you don't
understand? Try us - email us your
word, term or phrase and we will see if we can shed some light on the matter! /////////////////////////////// Almost every aspect of a normal book's life can and may adversely affect the acidity of it. The key is to recognize this. Once this concept is understood, a book can get a good start in life by being acid neutral and there are several things that may be done easily to prolong the life of the book - from decades to generations. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// Most of the work Gregath Publishing Company does in-house is offset printed. We offset print on uncoated papers. Uncoated papers have been traditionally classified by weight. Interest has begun to increase also as to the brightness as well as archival nature. As publishers, we have selected as our basis paper one that balances all of these issues while taking into account economy as well. If a customer has a list of specifics, or even a particular brand/type of paper, we are happy to get paper mill quotes and pass the information on. Gregath's standard book paper is a #50/60 uncoated white paper, acid free with a brightness of 84% - long grain. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// You have paid for acid free paper and your books is "built to last" - don't forget to include this in your list of positive selling points, when possible. After all, the beautiful book you have produced cost you (and, by extension the customer) more than if it was on newsprint paper! One place you always have a chance to mention this is in a press release. You may choose other selling points for space use in paid advertisements and networking time and space. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// Sometimes there is no substitute for the effort you could put in researching off the computer and outside of your home. Sometimes this takes the form of traipsing to cemeteries and court houses. Other times it means taking a trip (sometimes consisting of several days) to a targeted or major research repository. When a repository trip is called for, consider traveling with other researchers. Most groups take travel time as "sounding board" time. It's also nice to know someone else already when you enter a repository - even if it everyone's first trip. General research trips are offered through lots of places, from a school, library, organization, researcher travel agent, to us: http://www.gregathcompany.com/tours! When a cemetery/court house trip is needed, go ahead and ask for research travel companions (make an announcement at all your research related organizational meetings, poll you email address book, etc.), you never know who may want to go - for their own research, or just to "get away" for a bit. /////////////////////////////// Don't forget to double check your computer clock around daylight savings time. Many things about a computer system may cause you problems if your clock setting is very far off - say an hour. If you've moved your computer, or had a massive electrical outage, you will need to manually adjust your clock as well. Most newer systems automatically adjust for daylight savings time, but if your computer doesn't, here's how to fix it: From the desktop, select (click or double click - depending on your set up) "my computer", select "control panel", select "date and time" - this should bring up the date/time window. Click in the time box and change the time (you can also drag the clock hands). While you have the window open, you may want to look around in the box (and tabs). If your computer didn't adjust at daylight savings time, there may be a simple check box you can click so it will adjust in the future. Likewise, if you are in an area that doesn't observe DST and your computer is switching on you, you can click the box to deselect this option. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// The Gregath Publishing Company is pleased to present information that may be of help to authors and genealogists on a monthly basis in this format.
