Gregath Publishing e-zine Please note that while an effort to generalize much of this text has been made, some references to "we, our, etc." still occur and much of the information provided applies to The Gregath Publishing Company and may not with other printer/publishers. ALWAYS double check with your printer/publisher on every detail. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Table of Contents What's It
Mean? -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Trim Edge (or Margin - also "Fore Edge"): The edge of the page (leaf) or a board opposite from but parallel to, its binding edge (i.e., opposite from its binding edge). -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// While text that is justified at both right and left margins has a tidier effect, text that is justified on the left with a ragged right is actually easier to read. This is due to the fact that all spacing is uniform and no words are broken to wrap onto the next line. Both of these devices, though allowing uniform right and left edges, slow the reader's eye down as the brain processes these differences. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// The inclusion of an International Standard Book Number in your book design, places you in the "Books in Print" reference series, available in print and online from many different places. Additionally, this places the book in the database that most large chain bookstores and many smaller book shops use to special order titles. This is a way to get Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million to carry the book without loosing inventory control. If an author has their own ISBN, they fill these orders directly. Generally, if a publisher ISBN is used, a copy or two stays with the publisher to fill these orders. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// Whenever there is "filler space" throughout the year (or book), take a bit of it (don't quit nice holiday greetings, clip art, etc that subscribers have grown to depend on) to remind when renewals or other publications are. Additional Tip: Use different fonts, layouts, clip art to keep if from being standard and overlooked after the first issue/instance. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// In the world of MP3 players and multi-media computers, consider looking into podcasts for further information. The Genealogy Guys do a weekly podcast (broadcast online that can be listened to at any time/on demand) that is a pleasure to listen to - as well as having great genealogy information. If you are an oral learner (you have to be told, rather than reading, or experimenting), podcasts are a blessing, and many can be accessed at no fee. Do you find you have the radio on most of the time "in the background"? Download a podcast - or several - and you'll have the most effective "learning by osmosis" as you can get. Podcasts can be found online for a variety of subjects - even computers and software. This can also be a targeted value added service if played at a customer service related venue. The patrons of the Muskogee, Oklahoma Library (Genealogy Department) already enjoy this feature! Search podcasts out with your favorite search engine, or query your eList(s) for recommendations. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// Are you one of those folks who can't seem to get the mouse clicking on the right button? Lots of times, it can be as simple as being left handed - yes, a mouse is by default right handed. Do you continually click the right button, instead of the left? If you don't share your computer with many others, you can change your mouse to respond too your right clicks (just remember that if you do, all instructions to left click will be right, etc. instead): (XP instructions) Access your computer's control panel (double click the "my computer" icon on the desktop; in that window, click "control panel" in "other places" from the left column). In the control panel, double click "mouse" - this will bring up a mouse dialog box. Under the buttons tab, click the check box for "switch primary and secondary buttons" - the graphic to the right will then change buttons. Don't forget to click "Apply" (right button now) at the bottom of the box to close it. If you don't click the Apply button, the buttons may not remember the switch. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- /////////////////////////////// The Gregath Publishing Company is pleased to present information that may be of help to authors and genealogists on a monthly basis in this format.
