What’s It Mean?
///////////////////////////////

Advanced Reading Copy (ARC): A sample publication produced with author/customer submitted material.  Many times this is in an alternate binding (or unbound with small publications) than the main publishing.  The reproduction process is usually not the same as the main printing (100+) and therefore differences in quality, text block placement, etc. may occur between the ARC and the published book.  For POD, however, this gives the customer the chance to see the quality of photograph the supplied material will produce.  Since Gregath works mainly from submitted camera ready copy, an ARC is generally not necessary.  Our quality guarantee  covers any printer error (such as upside down photos) that may occasionally occur.

Against the Grain: Folding, scoring, binding, or printing at right angles to the alignment of the fibers of the paper.

Design Inspiration -
Specific suggestions while deciding index entry/item framework:
///////////////////////////////

  • Double entries are the same information listed more than once in an index. An example would be: Indian 4, 25 and Native American 4, 25. These are used often when there are not many page references.

Hybrid Continued:  Disks can be placed in envelopes or slim-line jewel cases to be delivered (or shrink wrapped) with printed books, or spindles may be attached to the end sheets to secure a CD in a hybrid book. Content ideas for this include:

  • Family desktop theme

R. R. Bowker, as America's ISBN agency, requires that the ISBN be printed on the bottom third of the book's verso (reverse of title page) as well as the bottom third of the back cover. This can be accomplished during publishing, or after a published book has been completed with printed labels. Additionally, the owner of the ISBN is required to complete the application on line to activate the number. ISBN fair use also states that any promotional material for a book carrying an ISBN should include the ISBN.

What software to use? (part 4)
///////////////////////////////

MS Publisher is nice to use, and can produce some very fancy manuscripts. However, for those used to a standard word processor, there is more of a learning curve involved. Additionally, what looks nice in publisher with the templates/grayscale can cause quality headaches down the road - depending on your method of publishing reproduction. If preparing a Publisher manuscript, double check with your publisher as to suggestions for best reproduction.
